The Hermit's Revenge

When Isaac Calder travels north to help his aunt and cousin, Eric, run their resort, he has no idea of the adventures that await him. During an excursion down the Blanche River with Willis Hamilton, their Ojibway friend, the boys come across signs of human activity at the long-abandoned Baldwin Mine. Their curiosity leads them to Shubel Chase, a reclusive old hermit who believes someone is dumping chemicals into the mine. That night, Shubel interrupts prowlers at the site and is violently attacked, leaving him unconscious. The next morning, the boys discover the injured man and rush him to the hospital, but the incident casts a shadow over the resort. As troubling events continue to unfold, Isaac's aunt becomes increasingly discouraged and considers selling the business.

Adventure and misfortune seem to follow the boys at every turn, and their troubles escalate when an intentionally-lit fire nearly claims their lives. Determined to uncover the truth, they piece together the clues and realize that the key to solving the mystery lies with the enigmatic Shubel Chase. Only through his invaluable help do they begin to unravel the strange and dangerous events surrounding the goings-on at the Baldwin Mine.
